FREEPORT — Gertrude E. Foster, 74, of Bow Street, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2015.

Gertie was born in Calais, a daughter of John J. (Jack) and Kathleen R. (Kay) McIntee. She graduated from Freeport high school, class of 1960.

Married her one and only love, high school sweetheart Lewis R. (Skeet) Foster in 1963.

Gertie was an employee for L.L. Bean for nearly 30 years and a former “Beans Best Award” recipient.

She was the matriarch for the family. She was known for her family values, work ethic, caring ways and her sparkling blue pool. Gertie was a stand-out high school basketball athlete, once scoring 58 points in one game. Her house was the gathering place for all family functions. Her greatest love was the time spent with her family, especially her kids and grandchildren. For many years Gertie owned harness race horses with her husband Skeet, whom were members of Maine Harness Horseman Association (MHHA). Gertie was an amazing mother, daughter, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

Gertie was predeceased by her husband in 1996.

She is survived by two sons, John L. of Pownal and Mark A. of Freeport; daughter, Julie A. of Brunswick; two sisters, Jacqueline (Jackie) Fournier of Freeport and Donna (Judy) Turner of New Hampshire; and grandchildren, Rachael, Danielle, Mason and Mya Foster. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015, from 3 to 6 p.m. at David E. Desmond & Son Funeral Home, 638 High St., Bath. Burial and celebration of Gertie’s life will be held in the spring.
