TOPSHAM

Topsham police say a man seriously injured in a crash on snow-covered roads the morning of Feb. 9 has died from his injuries.

Police reported that Christopher Wheeler, 48, of Lisbon, was driving west on Route 196 when his vehicle slid into the oncoming travel lane, where it was struck on the passenger side by a garbage truck. The crash was reported at 6:19 a.m. on Route 196 near McConnell Motors, not far from the Lisbon line. Wheeler’s passenger Donald Schafer, 48, sustained injuries. Both were taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where Wheeler was listed in critical condition the next day. Topsham police said Wheeler succumbed to his injuries Tuesday evening at CMMC.

A GoFundMe page was set up to help raise money for the Wheeler family and had raised more than $5,000 as of Thursday morning toward the $10,000 goal.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts to share that Chris passed away due to the injuries he sustained in a car accident a week ago,” the crowd funding page states. “Please continue to keep Michelle, Hayley, and the rest of the Wheeler family, close in thought and prayer during this time.”

According to the Crosman Funeral Home website, a celebration of life for Wheeler will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Berean Baptist Church at 15 Cumberland St., Brunswick.
