There currently is an ad running on our local TV stations maligning L.D. 652, which, if enacted, would allow law-abiding Maine citizens to carry handguns concealed without a permit.

This TV ad flat out lies about L.D. 652. The ad starts out, “Maine has a tradition of responsible gun ownership. We know our right to bear arms means keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous people.” Well, so far, so good.

Then comes the lie: “Even violent criminals could carry hidden loaded handguns in public.”

L.D. 652 would not legalize that. Persons convicted of a felony are already forbidden from even owning a gun, much less carrying one, openly or concealed. L.D. 652 wouldn’t change that.

Requiring a permit to carry a firearm concealed does nothing to prevent criminals – who, by definition, are lawbreakers anyway – from carrying a firearm, concealed or not.

Requiring a permit to carry concealed affects only the good folks, the ones who should be carrying. L.D. 652 would remove that obstacle, by allowing law-abiding Maine citizens – not just the criminals, who are doing it already – to carry concealed firearms without a permit.

Call and/or write your representatives and let them know you want them to support L.D. 652.
