Scarborough police say they believe that a man whose body was found Tuesday behind a shopping plaza off Payne Road committed suicide.

The police department said in a press release Wednesday that officers were called around 2:10 p.m. Tuesday after a walker found human remains in a wooded area between the Cabela’s store and Portland Pie Co. Officers found a shotgun near the body.

The remains were collected for examination by the state Medical Examiner’s Office. Scarborough police said their investigation concluded that the man killed himself. The man, who lived in Standish, was 44 when he died.

Police also determined that the body had been in that place since 2013. The man was not reported as missing, according to the department’s press release.

More details about the man and the circumstances surrounding his death will be released once the victim’s family members have been notified.
