According to Scarborough police, a South Portland man has been apprehended for shooting at a vehicle on Payne Road.

On Saturday at about 3:10 p.m., Scarborough police received a 911 call for a road rage incident that was in progress near the Christmas Tree Shop. The caller stated that the driver of a red Jeep Grand Cherokee had pointed a handgun out the window and fired a shot at another vehicle. The Jeep then fled south on Payne Road and the caller was unable to follow. The vehicle that was shot at left the scene as well.

A Scarborough police officer spotted the suspect’s vehicle on Beech Ridge Road traveling at a high rate of speed. The vehicle continued onto Johnson Road at a high speed, disregarding the pedestrians at a family gathering on that road. The suspect then parked near the end of Johnson Road and fled into the woods. A nearby resident was able to confirm there was only one male that exited the vehicle, and gave a description as well as direction of travel.

A sergeant and k-9 officer were conducting a track of the suspect when perimeter units saw the male and chased him into the woods. Two officers apprehended the male. The K-9 search also yielding a Glock 19 handgun buried under leaves.

Sean Johnson, 33, of South Portland, was arrested for driving to endanger, reckless conduct with a firearm, prohibited person in possession of a firearm, and a probation hold. The vehicle has been impounded pending a search warrant.

The victim was later located and it was determined that the suspect had in fact fired the weapon at their vehicle. The bullet traveled through the passenger side window, narrowly missing both the driver and passenger. The bullet lodged in the driver’s door. The victim’s vehicle is also being held for the investigation.
