The man who was shot by police in Lovell last week is free on bail after being arrested on several charges by state police.

Dennis Buffington, 31, of Nuthatch Road in Lovell was shot on May 20 by Oxford County Sheriff’s Cpl. George Cayer. The Attorney General’s Office is investigating the use of deadly force to determine whether it was justified, as it does in all police shootings.

Someone in the mobile home next door to Buffington called police to report a man with a gun causing a disturbance just before 1 a.m. Neighbors reported hearing people arguing and then gunshots. Then, they heard a car crash and another gunshot.

Police would not say whether Buffington was pointing his gun at officers when he was shot.

Buffington was flown by LifeFlight medical helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center. He was released from the hospital this week. State police promptly arrested him and charged him with discharging a firearm near a dwelling, driving to endanger, assault, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and aggravated criminal mischief.

Buffington was freed on personal recognizance bail Wednesday pending a future court appearance. Police released no further details about the incident because of the attorney general’s investigation. The case against Buffington remains under investigation by state police.
