Girls’ lacrosse semifinal: Marshwood slips past Thornton Academy, 4-2
The Hawks reach their first regional final since 2012, using key plays on both ends of the field to prevail.Isabelle Ury of Marshwood, left, competes for a loose ball with Julianna Grondin of Thornton Academy during the second half of Marshwood’s 4-2 victory in a Western Class A girls’ lacrosse semifinal.SOUTH BERWICK — When it’s close and low-scoring, every goal is magnified, each defensive stop special.
Second-seeded Marshwood High put one big check in each category – goal and save – in a 1:25 span late in Saturday’s Western Class A semifinal girls’ lacrosse game to secure its 4-2 win against No. 3 Thornton Academy.
Leading 3-2, Marshwood sophomore Hannah Costin set up senior tri-captain Korinne Bohunsky for the final goal with 4:25 to play. Costin had dropped and recovered the ball four times in the possession, but kept her cool and her eyes open, hitting Bohunsky as she cut behind the Thornton defense that had to extend its pressure.
“We connected eyes and really felt it on that play,” Bohunsky said. “We have a saying on this team to just feel it, and Hannah and I really work well together.”
With three minutes remaining Marshwood goalie Emily Kahler, another senior tri-captain along with midfielder Lindsey Poirier (1 goal), stared down fast-breaking Faith Sinclair and flashed her stick across her body to make a top-corner save.
“Every save is important so there is a lot of pressure on you, both goalies, both sides,” said Kahler, who finished with 10 saves. “Any goalie always gets nervous in a one-on-one like that, but I just look at the ball and track the ball and hopefully hope for the best.”
Marshwood (11-3) will host No. 4 Scarborough in Wednesday’s regional final.
Marshwood’s only other appearance in a regional final was a 2012 loss to Scarborough, when Coach Bernie Marvin’s seniors were freshmen.
Thornton had one final scoring bid that ended with Sinclair missing the net on a free-position shot. Thornton was 1 of 10 on free-position shots – the situation when an offensive player is given an open channel toward goal after a defensive infraction, with defenders lined up along the arc.
“We always practice putting our sticks in the middle and they stop the ball with their sticks,” Kahler said. “They had at least four that way. … Even if the (shots) did get through, it took away a little speed and that helps me out.”
Marshwood scored twice on free-position goals in the defense-dominated first half: Poirier at 9:36 and Bohunsky at 14:39, both beating Thornton keeper Allie Spinney (5 saves) with shots to the top of the net delivered from a high stick position.
Katie McCrum and Amanda Cyr scored for the Trojans (10-4). Costin scored Marshwood’s third goal.
“It was a classic playoff game,” Thornton Coach Craig Agreste said. “The bottom line is they capitalized on the free positions in the first half and we had opportunities.”

Girls’ lacrosse semifinal: Kennebunk earns another berth in Western Class B final
The Rams beat York and will try to erase memories of consecutive one-goal losses in finals.KENNEBUNK — The Kennebunk High girls’ lacrosse team has plenty of scoring options.
Add in that they all were on-target Saturday and it spelled a 13-10 Western Class B semifinal victory against York.
“If you give them an open look inside the 8 (yard arc), they’re very precise,” York Coach Jodie Lawlor said.
Second-seeded Kennebunk (13-1) will be at top-ranked Falmouth (13-1) for Wednesday’s regional final. Falmouth is the only team to beat the Rams.
It will be Kennebunk’s third straight trip to a regional final. The last two ended in one-goal losses, to Massabesic in Class A in 2013 and to Cape Elizabeth last year in Class B. The Rams’ last regional title was in Class B in 2007. They have not won a state title.
“This time around I think we’re just ready to not lose again,” midfielder Jenny Bush said. “We’ve been there twice and we know what it feels like to lose twice, and we don’t want that feeling again. We’re going to take all that energy from today and throw it into the next two practices and the game on Wednesday.”
Bush and Olivia Sanford each scored three goals. Kyra Schwartzman (3 assists) and Carly Sandler (2 assists) scored two each, with Gabby Fogg, Hallie Schwartzman and Katy Ross adding one goal each.
“There’s so many people that can go to the cage for us, you really can’t put all of your eggs in one basket,” Kennebunk Coach Annie Barker said.
Kennebunk led 13-6 after Ross’ goal from Sandler with 14:47 to play. From that point they focused on keeping possession.
Third-seeded York (10-4) took advantage of the occasional turnover and rare draw-control victory against Bush (Kennebunk had a 19-7 edge in that key stat) to score four goals down the stretch. Two came from Allie Lawlor, who finished with a game-high five goals.
York made it 5-5 with 8:20 left in a fast-paced first half on Mackenzie Mallett’s second goal.
Kennebunk then scored eight of the next nine goals. Two came after York had to sit a player due to yellow card infractions. Plus, Bush was credited for a goal with 2.1 seconds left in the half when a high pass deflected off the tip of her stick and went into the net.
“The one cheap one at the end of the half hurt but we played as hard as we could,” Coach Lawlor said.
“We got some really tough calls against us. I’ve never seen a yellow card for a cross-check before but Kennebunk played a good game. They did what they needed to do.”
