A fire in the cab of a tractor-trailer truck shut down Exit 17 northbound on Interstate 295 in Yarmouth for an hour Monday afternoon.

The fire broke out in some wiring behind the driver’s seat just before 4 p.m., said Maine State Police Trooper Marvin Hinkley. The fire badly damaged the cab, though not the trailer, which was hauling soda, he said.

Nobody was injured.

The truck driver had pulled most of the way off the highway onto the ramp so traffic was able to continue flowing north.

Traffic was slowed considerably, though, and the congestion led to a minor crash near Exit 16.
