The state Fire Marshal’s Office said Tuesday that the death of a Raymond man who fell into a fire pit early Saturday morning was an accident.

Fire Marshal Joe Thomas said an investigator from his office determined there was no evidence of any crime in the death of Timothy W. Small.

Small, 52, was drinking with friends around a fire pit in Small’s backyard early Saturday morning. Thomas said two of the friends went to bed while Small remained outside.

Around 2 a.m., Small fell into the rock-lined pit and suffered burns to 60 percent of his body. A press release issued last weekend by the fire marshal said Small “managed to stagger into his home, refused medical attention and went to bed.”

His friends urged him to seek medical treatment, said Thomas.

At some point Saturday morning – Thomas isn’t sure when – Small’s supervisor from work showed up at his house and persuaded Small to seek medical treatment.

Thomas said Small was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland before he was transferred to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where he died Sunday evening.

Thomas said Small suffered second- and third-degree burns to 60 percent of his body and was intoxicated when he fell into the fire pit.
