A nationwide computer issue that forced United Airlines to ground flights temporarily Wednesday morning affected travel at Portland International Jetport throughout the afternoon and evening.

Jetport Director Paul Bradbury said a grounded flight can have a ripple effect throughout an airline’s transportation system. “Technology is great until it doesn’t work,” Bradbury said.

The flight cancellations and delays started in Portland Wednesday morning when the United Airlines flight to Washington’s Dulles Airport was canceled for Wednesday afternoon along with a flight to Newark, New Jersey.

As of Wednesday evening the jetport’s online arrival and departures webpage showed several cancellations or delays.

Bradbury said it looks as though United Airlines flights scheduled to depart Portland Thursday morning will return to a normal schedule.

“People need to know this was a national issue and there is not much we can do locally to minimize,” Bradbury said.

It was the second time in two months the carrier has been hit by major technical issues.
