Police shut down Route 22 in Gorham on Tuesday night after a vehicle hit a utility pole, knocking out power to hundreds of customers in Gorham, Scarborough and Westbrook.
The dispatch center for the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said the accident, which was reported around 7:45 p.m., destroyed the utility pole and knocked out power to 1,387 customers. Most of the residents who lost their electricity live in Gorham and Scarborough.
Central Maine Power Co. sent a crew to the scene after receiving reports of someone being trapped in the vehicle by live wires, but when the crew arrived the vehicle was unoccupied.
Power was restored about 8:30 p.m. after crews “floated wires” over the site where the pole once stood. Route 22 from County and South streets to County and Deering Road will remain closed for as long as four hours while CMP crews erect a new utility pole.
