Gorham has a new chief of police.

Daniel Jones, the deputy chief in Kennebunk, has been chosen to lead the department in Gorham, Town Manager David Cole said in a press release issued Wednesday. Jones will start his new job Aug. 24.

Jones, who has been with the Kennebunk Police Department for seven years, has also worked as a detective, a supervisory constable and a lieutenant. He was appointed deputy chief in 2014.

“Gorham is a good town and it has a good police department,” he said. “Like anything, there are going to be challenges, but it makes my job easier when you are surrounded by good people.”

Jones, who lives in Kennebunk now, plans to move to Gorham eventually.

“I think I can see more and do more if I live there,” he said.

Jones will replace Ron Shepard, who retired in November after serving for 42 years. Since Shepard retired, Lt. Chris Sanborn has been the interim chief.

Gorham’s police department has 23 officers and staff members, said Jones. The town is building a new police station on Main Street.
