South Portland resident Sue McCarthy, 52, earned 10 national titles competing in two national track and field championships in July.

At the National Senior Games held July 10-13 in St. Paul, Minn., McCarthy represented the state of Maine winning four individual gold medals in the track and field competitions in the women 50-54 age group. She won the 50-meter, 100m, 200m, 400m. McCarthy was also a member of the winning 4x100m relay which also ran within .1 second of the women’s 50m world record.

At the USATF Masters Nationals held July 23-26 in Jacksonville, Fla., McCarthy finished off the season with five national gold medals and three master’s lifetime best performances in the 100m, 200m, 400m and the 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay. She improved on three personal records that were three years old.

“Never mind about getting older I just wanted to get faster,” she says about her performances. “I knew this was going to be high competition but I look forward to it to be pushed to do my very best.”

As of August, McCarthy ranks first in the United States in the 100m and 200m and second in the world in the 100m and 200m.
