The medical director for MaineCare, Maine’s Medicaid program, has taken a position at a California hospital.

Dr. Kevin Flanigan practiced as a primary care physician in Pittsfield before joining the Office of MaineCare Services in 2011.

His last day with the state was Aug. 14, said John Martins, a spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services.

Flanigan has accepted a position as the chief medical officer, chief operations officer and chief information officer at a hospital in Bishop, California, Martins said.

He said the department’s chief health officer, Dr. Christopher Pezzullo, and others will fill in for Flanigan until a replacement has been found.
