Author talk at Cape library

Author Joseph Souza will be on hand at the Thomas Memorial Library in Cape Elizabeth on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m.

He will be the special guest for the library’s monthly adult evening book group. The group will be discussing Souza’s novel, “Unpaved Surfaces.” Copies of the book are now available at Nonesuch Books or can be borrowed through the library.

waste day

Residents of South Portland can drop off household hazardous waste at the city’s public works facility on O’Neil Street at no charge on Saturday, Oct. 10, 9 a.m-1 p.m., although proof of residency is required.

Items to bring include fluorescent light bulbs, pool chemicals, drain cleaners, furniture polish, rechargeable batteries, wood stain, oil-based paint, insect sprays, antifreeze, kerosene and hobby or artist supplies, among others.

Unacceptable items include all pathological or radioactive waste, tires, computers, explosives, smoke detectors, propane cylinders and latex paint. Call 767-7635 or email to fdillon@southportland.org for more information.

Fire department

to host flu clinic

A community flu clinic is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 13, from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in the community room of the Cape Elizabeth Fire Station on Jordan Way for residents 6 years and older. Each flu shot costs $30, without insurance. Insurance from Medicare, Medicare Advantage Plans, AETNA, Martin’s Point, Harvard Pilgrim, Champus Tricare and Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield will be accepted during the clinic, and those who attend are asked to bring their insurance cards.

Gardeners meet

The Scarborough Garden Club will meet at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15, in the recreation hall at the Hillcrest Retirement Community. The program will feature Roger Doiron of Kitchen Gardens International. Guests are welcome. Call 809-2985 for more information.

Harvest fest to

feature live band

On Saturday, Oct. 17, the Scarborough Education Foundation will hold its annual Harvest Celebration fundraiser at Bayley’s Camping Resort on Pine Point Road.

Tickets for the event, which runs from 6 to 10:30 p.m. are $35 a person. In addition to live music from the Dan Campbell Band, the event also includes a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.

Portland Head Light history walk offered

Jim Rowe from the Cape Elizabeth Historical Preservation Society will lead a free walk through Fort Williams Park focused on the history of the fort, the lighthouse and Goddard Mansion on Friday, Oct. 16, at 8:30 a.m. The walk is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required at www.capecommunityservices.org or 799-2868.

Cape waives

recycling fees

Disposal fees at the Cape Elizabeth Recycling Center will be waived for residents from Saturday, Oct. 10, through Monday, Oct. 26.

In addition, the center will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. four Sundays this fall – Oct. 18, Oct. 25, Nov. 1 and Nov. 8 – for the disposal of recyclables, leaf, yard waste, wood waste, bulky waste and brush only.
