Voting is the cornerstone of democracy, yet the enormous scale of spending on political campaigns is increasingly drowning out the voices of everyday Mainers in our elections.
That’s why the ACLU of Maine supports Question 1, which will strengthen transparency and accountability laws and elevate the voices of those Mainers in our political system.
The ACLU of Maine recognizes that the integrity of the electoral system is of significant constitutional value.
We believe that the public has a legitimate interest in knowing the source of large contributions, while, at the same time, ensuring that disclosure rules won’t have a chilling effect on free speech.
Question 1 will improve the transparency and integrity of our elections, and ensure a government that is of, by and for the people.
