Re: “Moratorium on liquefied petroleum gas depot lacks support on South Portland council” (Nov. 9):
The South Portland City Council has never shied away from using a moratorium to study and evaluate proposals of concern to the community. It should not shy away now.
Many residents and business owners are rightfully concerned about the proposal to build a propane transloading facility in the heart of the Thornton Heights neighborhood.
Serious questions about security have been raised.
Experts are concerned, too, including a former state fire marshal who spoke at a recent council workshop and testified that the proposed location of the facility would not be appropriate.
There may be a way to make this proposal work for everyone, but city leaders and members of the community need additional time to figure out how to do that.
A moratorium would be appropriate.
There’s no harm in taking the time to get it right.
