A Bath Iron Works employee had to be lifted off a ship by a crane after he fell off a ladder and was injured.

The worker lost his balance on a stepladder and fell about 6 feet, said BIW spokesman Matt Wickenheiser. The man fell into a tight space, which required rescue workers from BIW’s fire department and Bath Fire & Rescue to remove him using a Stokes basket and a rope system, he said.

The man was hoisted to staging at the bow of the ship then put in an evacuation box, which was lifted off with a crane, Wickenheiser said.

The man, who was conscious and alert throughout the evacuation but in pain, was taken by Bath rescue workers to Mid Coast Hospital for evaluation.

Wickenheiser did not identify the worker.
