SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A fugitive who escaped from the Hampden County Correctional Facility in western Massachusetts has surrendered to authorities in Springfield.
The Springfield Republican reports 23- year-old Ackeem Graham managed to escape while going through the intake process at the Ludlow jail on Wednesday afternoon.
Graham, who was about to begin a one-year sentence for a firearms conviction, slipped out through the jail’s pedestrian sally port just after 3 p.m.
A manhunt for Graham began immediately after jail officials reported his escape.
Hampden County Sheriff ’s Department spokesman Richard McCarthy says law enforcement officials received a call from Graham several hours later saying he wished to surrender.
Graham is expected to face new charges as a result of his escape.
