The speed limit on the Maine Turnpike has been reduced early Thursday because of icy conditions.

A freezing rain advisory is in effect across southern Maine until 9 a.m.

Pockets of freezing rain will create some slick spots during the morning commute, especially on untreated back roads, according to the National Weather Service in Gray.

Temperatures should climb above freezing across southern areas later this morning and across northern Maine around noon, according to the weather service.

The Brunswick Police Department posted an advisory on Facebook to warn drivers that a light rain and temperatures hovering around freezing have led to slippery overpasses and secondary roads. Town crews are out treating roads, but may not be able to get to them all before the morning commute, according police.

Rain is expected to arrive in the area by mid-afternoon and temperatures should reach the 40s.
