I would like to thank U.S. Sen. Susan Collins for her continued support of funding for medical research through the National Institutes of Health, and the Portland Press Herald for bringing this to the attention of their readers in a recent editorial.

As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Sen. Collins played a key role in increasing the funding by $2 billion in the last budget deal. NIH funding has previously brought $72 million to Maine, creating 1,700 jobs and $174 million in economic activity.

More importantly, this funding allows our researchers to continue to find new ways to address cancer and other diseases, which have become more prevalent in our society.

With the work being done, dear friends can be saved. The research we can do will save the future. My close friend Lt. Col. Robert P. Crowley would be proud if he were still with us.

Thank you for once again putting Maine people first, Sen. Collins!
