Your special section in the Jan. 3 paper, “Photos of the Year,” was truly exceptional in the broad swath of its scope. From lobstering to elver fishing, running, swimming, baseball and basketball shots, sailors and sailboats, people with all their humanity exposed – remarkable.

However, Derek Davis’ front-page photo in your Jan. 1 paper of Haroun Adam and his son surpasses even those stunning shots (“Reunited Sudanese family embraces future in Maine”). It defines paternal love and the beauty of human endurance.
