BRUNSWICK — A man fled and was tackled by Brunswick police Monday night after they confronted him for allegedly leaving a Brunswick grocery store without paying for a cart full of items.

Police were called to Hannaford on Elm Street at 7:44 p.m. Monday and ended up arresting Haven Willis, 41, a transient, and charging him with theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, violating condition of release and refusing to submit to arrest or detention.

Brunswick Police Cmdr. Mark Waltz said Willis was at Hannaford, “and he loaded up a shopping cart without paying for it. Officers met him outside the store and he attempted to flee from officers and they tackled him.”

Waltz said there were about two-dozen items in the cart ranging from lighters to donuts.

Willis was taken to the police station and then to Cumberland County Jail in Portland.
