STONINGTON, Maine (AP) — Investigators with the Maine State Fire Marshal’s office say a Deer Isle man set the fire that destroyed a house in Stonington in 2014.

Officials have charged 47- year-old David Smith with arson and aggravated criminal mischief. He was arrested Friday and is scheduled to appear in court in Ellsworth next month.

Authorities say Smith set the fire that destroyed a house owned by Michael Hutchinson, who lives next door to the scene of the Nov. 15, 2014 fire at 25 Sunset Drive. Officials say Hutchinson had hired Smith to clean out the house, which he intended to raze.

Two phone numbers listed to Smith were not in service. It was not immediately known if he has a lawyer.
