The superintendent of schools in Windham has sent an email to the school community addressing the sexual assault charges against a co-captain of the Windham High School football team.

Tyrell Gullatt, an 18-year-old senior, faces two counts of gross sexual assault on a child under the age of 12.

Although Gullatt was under 17 at the time of the alleged assaults and is being charged in juvenile court, some information about the case was made public because the charges are felonies.

In Wednesday’s brief email, which was also posted on the Windham High School website, Regional School Unit 14 Superintendent Sandy Prince said the alleged assaults did not occur on school property.

“We continue to be vigilant with efforts to keep students in our schools and our community at large safe at all times,” Prince wrote. “In these circumstances, it is our practice to provide a school safety plan to ensure that all parties are protected. The plan has been adhered to and has been effective since the onset of its implementation.”

Neither Gullatt nor his parents have been reachable for comment. His next appearance in juvenile court in Portland is slated for March 7.

Gullatt was nominated for the Frank J. Gaziano Offensive and Defensive Lineman Awards, which required Windham High’s principal, athletic director and football coach to submit letters of recommendation. The awards are given annually to high school football linemen who are role models for others and have high levels of integrity, honesty and athletic citizenship, according to the award foundation’s selection criteria.

Principal Chris Howell acknowledged being aware of the charges against Gullatt when he wrote the letter of recommendation, and defended his decision to do so.

Gullatt is accused of sexually assaulting a child in 2014 who is now 5. He is accused of sexually assaulting another child in 2013. That child is now 8.

In two civil cases, the parents of young girls sought protection orders against Gullatt and offered detailed accusations of sexual abuse.
