“For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” Matthew 6:14a

Seeking Forgiveness

Why do we find it so hard to forgive? Do we consider it a sign of weakness to let the other person off the hook so easily? Or do we look at it as a loss of perceived power? But then, there may be a certain sense of self-righteousness that can be very gratifying, but which may prevent us from coming face to face with our own flaws, so we fail to forgive ourselves in the process. No matter how we look at it, forgiveness is not easy. It is a complicated process and it can take time to work through the emotional problems. Unforgiveness separates us from one another. It builds walls instead of bridges. We forgive others not because they deserve it, but because we need it. It is the key which unlocks the door to freedom, and it is the only thing that will bring about a true change of heart. It sets us free and enables us to become all that God wants us to be. So if we have something too deep to work through on our own, we are invited to leave it at the foot of the cross. That is what Jesus died for, and it is God’s ultimate gift to all of mankind.
