A Bangor man was seriously injured Saturday morning when the van he was driving crashed into the rear of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 95 in Fairfield.

According to Maine State Police, the crash occurred about 8 a.m. when the van, driven by Kenneth Billings, 46, of Bangor, hit the rear of the tractor-trailer, driven by Mason Markley, 40, of Danielson, Connecticut. Both vehicles were in the southbound lanes of the highway, police said.

Witnesses told police that Billings was driving erratically and speeding, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

It took rescue crews nearly an hour to get Billings out of the van, McCausland said, and he was taken to a local hospital for treatment, then transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

McCausland said the tractor-trailer was taking a load of paper to Arizona. He said the southbound travel lane of the interstate was shut down for more than four hours after the accident.

Billings was listed in serious condition Saturday night at Maine Medical Center.
