This photograph, which originally appeared on the cover of the Jan. 17, 1955, Portland Evening Express, shows the old Amato’s at the corner of India and Newbury Streets in Portland. The accompanying caption explained that “there’s more sand than snow on Portland’s streets” after a nearly snowless January that year.
A 2016 view of the same scene shows a similarly springlike scene, shot on Monday, March 14.

A view up India St. in downtown Portland, with Amato’s sandwich shop on the right at the corner of Newbury Street, photographed on Monday, March 14, 2016.
