FALMOUTH — The Falmouth High boys’ lacrosse team got about everything it could want Friday in a 19-6 season-opening victory against Freeport.

Falmouth had on-target snipers in attackers Jack Scribner and Devin Russell, each scoring six goals.

The offense also had plenty of support. Rangy midfielder Nick Farnham rifled three goals past beleaguered Freeport keeper Zac Wogan. Andrew Langdon, Lou Mainella, George Gilbert, and George Fitzgerald each had a single goal.

Falmouth’s 13 assists were evidence of crisp ball movement.

“I was really pleased coming out here the first game and getting the ball moving around,” said Scribner, who had a game-high four assists. “We have prided ourselves on working hard and we’ve done a lot of ball movement stuff.”

Defenders like Brendan Hickey and long-stick midfielder Riley Reed, a promising freshman, forced Freeport to score on tough shots under pressure.

Sophomore goalie Ethan Chapman stepped up with several early saves in just his second career start.

“Our offense really helped us out and Ethan, our sophomore goalie, played tremendous, and hopefully we can come out and get better every single game,” Hickey said.

The Yachtsmen even got an unexpected home game because Freeport’s field was deemed too wet for play.

About the only thing missing was Coach Mike Lebel. He was serving a one-game suspension for drawing two yellow cards in Falmouth’s first scrimmage, according to Athletic Director Cooper Higgins.

Falmouth assistant coach Kris Dambach took over the lead coaching responsibilities.

“We have a lot of returners from last year who got a lot of playing time, so they’re comfortable playing with each other,” Dambach said. “We were real young last year, but they got a lot of experience.”

Another strong aspect of Falmouth’s game was its ability to apply pressure after Wogan made a save or Freeport forced a rare turnover. Many Freeport possessions ended before the Falcons could clear the ball, especially in Falmouth’s 7-1 third quarter that stretched its lead to 18-5.

“It’s just applying a lot of pressure and making sure they have to make the long throws,” Russell said.

Freeport also was worn down by Falmouth’s depth.

“Several of our starters are already on vacation,” Freeport Coach Geoff Arris said. “We were running 17 against 30 (Falmouth players), I believe.”

Freeport was playing outside for just the third time this season and has yet to get on its own field, Arris said.

“We put in more goals than we have in years past, so that’s a positive,” Arris said. “Their transition against us gave us trouble. Three crisp passes and they’re in on Zac (Wogan) all of a sudden.”

Conner Dostie scored three goals for Freeport. Brady Lafrance, Eli Fox and Nate Thomas each had one. Midfielder Perrin Davidson displayed some good toughness, winning ground balls and being able to absorb checks without losing the ball.
