BIDDEFORD — The U.S. Department of Transportation is giving the Biddeford Municipal Airport more than $300,000 to improve safety.

The funding will total about $337,000 and will be used to remove trees that are obstructions in a runway approach area. It will also help pay to acquire a property that is required to perform the removal.

U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King announced the funding. Collins is a Republican and the chairwoman of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations subcommittee. King is an independent.

The Federal Aviation Administration awarded the money.
