Two women were killed Tuesday morning in a head-on collision between a sport utility vehicle and a commercial truck on Route 3 in Trenton.
Route 3, which connects the mainland to Mount Desert Island, was closed for several hours after the crash, which was reported at 8:45 a.m.
The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department identified the victims as the driver of the 2008 Pontiac Torrent, Mary Massucco, 75, of Mount Desert, and her passenger, Dawn Meardy, 45, of Bar Harbor.
The driver of the commercial vehicle, Adam Keeler, 21, of Trenton, was taken to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth. Keeler was driving a flatbed truck owned by Lane Construction Co. His medical condition was not available.
According to police, Massucco was driving south on Route 3 when her SUV began to drift into the northbound lane. Keeler tried to avoid the SUV by crossing into the southbound lane. The vehicles collided near the center of the roadway.
The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s department and the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit. Police said the crash took place near Ellsworth Chainsaw, a power equipment dealer on Route 3.
