“MAQUOIT BAY”

BRUNSWICK

Arts Are Elementary has announced that Brunswick artist Carol Verhey has donated an original acrylic art piece, “Maquoit Bay,” for this year’s art raffle held in conjunction with the 9th Annual 10×10 Art Exhibit and Sale.

Verhey has always loved the fine arts, and has dabbled in most of them. She works primarily in acrylics, though she also dabbles in watercolors, fabric collage and mosaics. Landscapes and nature interest her most and she revels in all that Maine has to offer an artist.

“Maine is an artist’s happy place,” Verhey said.

Verhey is largely a self-taught artist, and has had no formal art training since college. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 20 years ago, she now has the use of just her left hand. Having always been a “righty,” she had to teach herself how to paint left-handed. Painting has become a sanctuary, she said, as she deals with the increasingly debilitating symptoms of her disease.

The 10×10 Art Exhibit and Sale began nine years ago and now serves as the major annual fundraiser for Arts Are Elementary, a Brunswick nonprofit that provides a curriculum-based, professional artist residency for every K-5 classroom. Carol raised her family in Brunswick and recalls being a parent helper for past AAE residencies.

This year’s 10×10 Art Exhibit and Sale will be held on Sept. 30 from 6-8:30 p.m. at both the Morrell Meeting Room at Curtis Memorial Library and next door in the Parish Hall of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. The show will feature 309 original works of art, all measuring 10 inches by 10 inches, by 179 Maine artists. All work will sell for $200, with half of the proceeds collected by the artist and the other half designated to help fund Arts Are Elementary programming.

A preview of this year’s art can be seen online on the 10×10 website at 10x10brunswick.org, as well as live at the Curtis Library and St. Paul’s sites on Sept. 29 from 5-8 p.m. and Sept. 30 from noon to 3 p.m.

Tickets for “Maquoit Bay” are on sale now. Contact Arts Are Elementary Board Chair Kate Kalajainen either via the Arts Are Elementary or 10×10 Brunswick Facebook pages or at kkalajainen@yahoo.com.
