‘Wizard of Oz’ auditions

Windham Center Stage Theater’s spring children’s show, “The Wizard of Oz,” is open to children in grades 2-8. Shows will be in March. Auditions will begin Saturday, Oct. 1, at 9 a.m. To reserve an audition slot, go to windhamtheater.org and click on “Auditions” to fill out an online form. Slots are limited, but all kids who audition will receive a part. For more information about the show and important dates to be aware of, visit the website at windhamtheater.org.

Amazing Chase winners

Thirteen teams participated in the Amazing Chase event hosted by the Sebago Lake Region Chamber of Commerce on Saturday, Sept. 24. During the competitive event, modeled after the TV show, “The Amazing Race,”  teams used smart technology on a scavenger hunt through the Lakes Region. The teams had over 30 challenges from which to choose, each with points attached. The winning team was the Sloth Ninjas of Portland with 26,541 points accumulated. Sloth Ninjas team members are Sarah Romac, Sandy Woznicki, Russ Boynton and Brooks Campanais.

Triple B

Riding to the Top Therapeutic Riding Center will host its 9th annual Triple B – Boots, Band and BBQ Saturday, Oct. 15, from 5:30-11 p.m. at 14 Lilac Drive, Windham.

This year’s Triple B will celebrate “The Magic of Team Work,” and features DennyMike’sbarbecue, dancing to the live music of local favorite “Under The Covers,” a photo booth, boot contests and door prizes. Michelle Taylor of 99.9 THE WOLF will return to emcee, and auctioneer Elizabeth Holmstrom will call the unique mission-based auction.

The annual event plays a vital role in the riding center’s ability to provide equine-assisted activities and therapies for local children and adults with disabilities. Last year the event raised over $100,000 for riderships, horse care and programs. This year, organizers have a goal to best last year. Riding To The Top is a community-based nonprofit, receives no federal, state or municipal funding and provides scholarships to over 60 percent of its clients.

Country-western concert

A country-western concert featuring Lou and Maureen Mathieu will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Windham Veterans Center. A bean supper will be served from 5-6:30 p.m. with the concert at 7 p.m. Admission will be $8 for the supper and $10 for the concert or $15 for both. Proceeds will benefit the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame and Windham Veterans Center. For more information, call Dick at 310-0390.

Legion meeting
American Legion Field-Allen Post 148 will hold its monthly membership meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at the Windham Veterans Center. A 5 p.m. social/dinner will be followed by a business meeting at 6 p.m. October is new member month. Please consider bringing along a vet to the meeting and introducing them to the Post.

Little red wagon raffle
A little red wagon is being raffled off by Windham Historical Society. This is a  fund-raiser to help the society continue its mission of developing the Village Green, and providing school children with Windham history tours and lessons. Raffle tickets are available at the museum, 234 Windham Center Road, Tuesday-Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon; at the polls Nov. 8; and at the Christmas Fair on Saturday, Nov. 12. The cost of tickets is 6 for $5 or $1 each. The winning ticket will be drawn on Nov. 12.

October orange bargains

The North Windham Union Church Thrift Shop will hold a half-price sale on anything orange throughout the month of October. Come on by on Wednesdays from 1-3 p.m., Thursdays 1-3 p.m., or Saturdays from 10 a.m. until noon. You might find a great Halloween costume! The Thrift Shop sells clothing, children’s items, household goods, books, craft items and more and is located at the church, near the corner of routes 302 and 115.

Senior news

Lakes Region Senior Center has rescheduled its Oxford Casino trip to Sunday, Oct. 2. The brunch-trip attendees will meet at the center at 8 a.m. and carpool, with riders sharing gas cost, to the casino. Brunch and entertainment is “on your own.”

The Memoir Group has started again and will meet at 10 a.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at the center. Call David at 892-5604 for more information. Also a reminder that dues of $20 for 2017 are due.

Medicare open enrollment info

On Tuesday, Oct 4, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging will offer a “Welcome to Medicare” seminar at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham, from 10 a.m. to noon. In addition to the Medicare seminar, there will be one-on-one counseling with volunteer Medicare advocates available from 9 a.m. to noon on Oct 4. and then each Tuesday from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, the Medicare Open Enrollment Period. The Medicare Open Enrollment Period is your chance to find out about your lowest cost options for 2017 and perhaps change your Medicare Drug Plan or Medicare Advantage Plan. Veterans Coffee Break

Every Wednesday, a Veterans Coffee Break is held from 9-11 a.m. at Windham Veterans Center. All veterans are welcome to stop by and take a break from the day’s routine, visit with old or new friends and find out what’s new.
