Morse High School boys’ and girls’ soccer teams recently played with more than winning the game in mind. The teams raised more than $2,300 for the American Cancer Society to support cancer research and cancer patients. The girls’ soccer team has been involved in the Coaches vs Cancer program for several years, raising more money for the cause than any other high school team in Maine. This year the boys’ soccer team helped with the efforts as well.

“Over the past five years the Morse soccer team has raised more than $10,000 through this program,” said American Cancer Society Coaches vs Cancer Program Manager Brian Casalinova. “This team and this community consistently goes above and beyond in their support of the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving mission.”

For their Oct. 18 game against Lincoln Academy, the teams both wore pink for breast cancer awareness. In addition to collecting donations and pledges, they had bake sales, raffled off donated items, held a 50/50 raffle, had concession proceeds go toward the cause as well as sold cards for people to write the names of loved ones on and hang on the “wall of hope.” Soggy Dog Designs helped by sponsoring the efforts as well.

Parent and fundraising organizer Doris Gagne said she wanted to be involved because cancer touches the entire community.

“We are all effected directly or indirectly by cancer,” said Gagne. “We felt it was a noble cause to continue the fight against cancer. Thank you to all the parents, players, fans and local businesses that lent their time and support to help make this night possible. “
