SACO—Sharon Berger passed away on Nov. 22, 2016, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough after a long illness. She was 82 years old.

She was born in Willimantic and moved to Old Orchard Beach at the beginning of World War II when her father got a job at the South Portland shipyards. She graduated from Old Orchard Beach High School.

She moved to the Washington, D.C. area after marrying her first husband, Bob Hunter. They had one child, Wendy. Sharon moved back to Maine in the early 1980s to be closer to her daughter, who had moved there a few years earlier.

Sharon had a beautiful singing voice. As a teenager, she sang with some of the local big bands. She loved music, traveling and theater, but especially loved spending time with her daughter and son-in-law. Sharon was known for her great sense of humor, her lively personality, and her love of jewelry (her grandnieces and grandnephews lovingly called her “Auntie Bling”).

She also loved animals. Throughout her life she had several cats, birds and a dog. In recent years, Sharon became a supporter of the Ever After Mustang Rescue in Biddeford, as her daughter, Wendy, is a volunteer there. She sponsored one of the horses and attended several of their events.

Sharon is survived by her daughter, Wendy Harris and son-in-law, Mike. She also is survived by several nieces and nephews, Sharon Weeman, Mitch McCrory, Michael McCrory, Maynard Cook, Ginny Phillips and their families.

There are no services planned now, but a memorial will be held in the spring/summer of 2017. Sharon had her body donated to the University of New England Medical School.

If you would like to do something to honor her memory, please consider a donation to a local animal shelter or to the Ever After Mustang Rescue, 463 West St., Biddeford, ME 04005.
