TOPSHAM

Rev. Joseph Lamarre Memorial Post 2197 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Topsham has selected the United Farmer Veterans of Maine cabin initiative as its special project for this year.

United Farmer Veterans of Maine is a non-profit organization comprised of more than 220 veteran-owned farms across Maine. Their mission is to assist each other in operating sustainable farms, and in helping veterans get established in farming. They help each other with hands-on assistance, and education on methods including new technologies that permit year round production of crops.

A website is being created that will allow member farms to advertise and sell their products online and will include delivery options. In addition, they have begun a cabin building project on their farms to provide shelter for homeless veterans or those who need a change of locale to sort things out. For those interested, they will provide farm work and training in the agricultural business. The goal is to erect up to 300 cabins, with several currently under construction.

Post 2197 membership authorized a $220 donation to the cabin initiative, and applied to VFW National Headquarters for a matching grant, which was approved, bringing the donation up to $440. Jerry Ireland, the Executive Director of “United Farmers of Maine” attended the post’s December membership meeting to provide an update of his organization, the cabin project, and to receive our donation.
