AUGUSTA (AP) — Gov. Paul LePage says he doesn’t support the Maine attorney general’s decision to sign onto a legal brief urging a federal appeals court to uphold a ruling that’s halted President Donald Trump’s travel ban.
The Republican chief executive tweeted Tuesday that Democratic Attorney Janet Mills “speaks for herself” and that he supports Trump’s executive order banning people from seven Muslim-majority countries for 90 days.
The amicus brief was filed Monday with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
Washington state, Minnesota and Hawaii are arguing that the San Francisco-based court should allow a temporary order blocking the travel ban to stand. Mills said careful scrutiny of immigrants is needed, but that there shouldn’t be a “religious test” for entering the country.
