“Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil.” Luke 4:1-2

Lightening Up

The season of Lent invites us to take stock of our lives. How are we progressing in our spiritual journey? Do we need to make some changes in our daily lives? Lent is the time of searching. Perhaps we feel the need to shake free and make a fresh star t, to get ready for a new self to be born within us. A good place to begin is with simple awareness, to stop and take notice of anything that may be bogging us down and making us feel overburdened. Everywhere we go we are surrounded by the temptation to overindulge, making it difficult to focus on our basic needs. Jesus was forty days in the desert fasting and resisting temptation. Fasting is not about refraining from nourishing ourselves. The real culprit is overindulgence which slows us down. When we cease to hunger we lose our zest for life. Lent is a time to lighten up, to learn to be content with what we have, and to deepen our relationship with God through prayer. Our spiritual selves need constant attention so let’s not let our souls become couch potatoes.

Lord, help us to resist the temptation to overindulge. Amen
