On Saturday, nearly two dozen activists gathered at the Bath Customs House to call for a special prosecutor to investigate President Donald Trump’s relationship with Russia and to oppose the president’s American Health Care Act which was passed by the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

“It’s a dual purpose rally today,” said Lin Maria Riotto of Bath. “We’re asking for an independent investigation of Russian collusion, and we’re also asking for a reconsideration of Trumpcare.”

“There are so many things to protest against the Trump royalty that we picked the two top ones this week,” said Indivisible Sagadahoc founder Jessica Mahnke.

The protest comes just days after Trump unceremoniously and unexpectedly fired FBI Director James Comey, leading to renewed speculation about his campaign’s ties with Russian interference in the election which the FBI is investigating. Following that action, many politicians called for an independent investigation that could be free from tampering by the executive branch.

“The credibility has been destroyed. I think Trump has destroyed the credibility of the FBI,” said Janet Kehl of Arrowsic. “Why would anyone believe him anymore?”

The American Health Care Act narrowly passed the House earlier in May, and has moved to the Senate where it received little fanfare.

“There is nothing right with it. It is a blatant partisan attempt to remove health care from the folks who need it most and in the process enrich folks who really don’t need enriching more than they already have,” said Riotto.

Indivisible Sagadahoc will be hosting a discussion with Rep. Jennifer Dechant, D-Bath, on Monday night about how citizens can take an active part in state politics. The event will be held at the Center for Peace and Community at 7 p.m.
