I take exception with Gov. Paul LePage’s recent claim that teachers are “a dime a dozen.” My mother was a proud teacher for 22 years in central Maine, and my sister taught locally for close to 50 years. Our youngest daughter has also taught in the school system, helping many, many young people to become intelligent, productive citizens in our world. They gave them the tools to be successful in the business arena as well as building healthy relationships.
Our governor should remember where he first learned to read and write – from the efforts of a hard-working teacher who spent countless hours preparing for his/her classes, and probably spent much of their own money for school supplies. Teaching is the one career that helps to build countless careers!
