Pick your apples
Autumn has officially arrived and some trees are following suit, turning yellow, red and russet and dropping leaves, but the recent weather seems to indicate that summer is still here and doesn’t want to leave any time soon. What a unique luxury to pick apples in such warm and sunny weather. Orchards all over the state are open up to the public for picking this year’s crop and Five Fields Farm on Route 107 in South Bridgton is now offering MacIntosh, Cortlands, Macouns, and Honey Crisp apples for applesauce, cider and, of course, pies. The orchard and farm stand are open daily from 9 a.m. to dusk. If you want to pick your own it is always a good idea to call them before you go at 647-2425 to see what is available.
Bridgton library lecture
The third and final lecture in a series sponsored by the Maine Humanities Council will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m. at the Bridgton Public Library on Main Street. Hong Zhang, associate professor of East Asian Studies at Colby College, will speak on China’s One Child Policy. The talk is free and open to the public. Sarah Perry book talk
Many local people will remember the horrific killing of Bridgton resident Crystal Perry in 1994. The perpetrator was eventually caught, nearly 13 years later, but what happened to Crystal’s daughter, Sarah, who was in the room next door while her mother was being murdered?
Find out on Wednesday, Oct. 18, when Sarah Perry will be give a talk about the incident, which she has detailed in her memoir, “After the Eclipse.” The talk and book signing are being sponsored by Bridgton Books and will take place at the Magic Lantern Theater at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 18; doors open at 5 p.m. Tickets to the event may be purchased at Bridgton Books for $27, which includes a copy of Sarah’s book that she will sign. Space is limited so early reservations are encouraged.
During the event, Sarah will talk about the night her mother was murdered and how she managed to deal with such an enormous loss to carry on, go to college and write her memoir. Native plant planning
Perennial Point of View will join the Lakes Environmental Association on Friday, Oct. 6, from 12:20 to 3:30, for an afternoon of teaching, planning, choosing plants and consulting on special garden spaces.
Learn how to develop form, function and color through the season by applying a “perennial point of view,” as well as an indigenous plant perspective. Planting demonstrations will show you how to practice laying out plants on a blank landscape to test your eye and allow time to start your own process.

Cook, create with adult ed
Internationally inspired cooking classes are featured this summer through Lake Region Adult Education. Sample the tastes of the Mediterranean with Pasta 101 on Oct. 3, Italian Cooking Oct. 17, Spanish Tapas Nov. 7 and Greek Cooking Dec. 5. In addition, Cooking with Essential Oils is scheduled for Oct. 24 and Sushi Success at Home for Oct. 10.
If the culinary arts aren’t your thing, there are also these creative one-night classes: Crochet Wire Jewelry on Oct. 3, Painting Sunflowers Step-by-Step Oct. 12, Basic Beaded Earrings Nov. 9 and Wire-Wrapped Sea Glass Earrings Nov. 28.
