BRUNSWICK

Brunswick High School’s Jazz program musicians are set to perform for a good cause — BHS’s music programs.

The Eighth Night of Swing and Jazz will take place at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Brunswick High School’s Crooker Theater. The public is invited to enjoy a complimentary dessert buffet and take part in a silent auction featuring more than 75 items donated from local businesses.

The buffet and auction will be followed by jazz performances by student musicians at 7 p.m., and then the Opus One Big Band.

Tickets — $10 for adults and $5 for students — can be purchased at the door or in advance from any high school music student. The event is organized by the Brunswick High School Music Boosters and the proceeds benefit all students in the varied Brunswick High School Music programs.

The Opus One Big Band is comprised of professional musicians, many of them Maine music educators, who perform to benefit music programs in the state. The band, under the direction of Doug Kennedy, has played at fundraisers and benefits for more than 20 years.

The Brunswick High School student musicians, under the direction of Instrumental Director Mike Scarpone, have been regularly honored at District 3, All- State, All-Eastern, and All- National Music Festivals. They earned the Outstanding Band award in Class “B” at the Clark Terry UNH Jazz Festival 2015 and 2017, Honorable Mention at the 2016 Clark Terry UNH Jazz Festival, and have earned consistent Gold Awards at the MMEA District 3 Jazz Festival 2010 – 2017. Scarpone has been honored as a District 3 Outstanding Music Educator of the Year.

“Mrs. Albert and I are very fortunate that the students and parents in Brunswick are dedicated to building a high quality music program with a challenging musical repertoire,” he said. “The community is in for a great jazz performance on Saturday night.”

Among the silent auction items are an Apple Watch 3 Series, 100 gallons of Fuel Oil donated by Dead River, dinner theater with donations of a $100 Gift Certificate to Henry & Marty’s Restaurant and a voucher for a pair of tickets to Maine State Music Theater’s 2018 production of “Million Dollar Quartet.”
