WISCASSET

The town of Wiscasset has sued the state over a project aimed at improving flow of traffic through its waterfront village area.

The state wants to widen the town’s Main Street, which is a major point of congestion in coastal Maine during the summer tourism season. Wiscasset officials say the Maine Department of Transportation’s project would harm the historic character of the downtown village.

The project would cost $5 million. A spokesman for the transportation department says the state has been working in good faith to address concerns about the project.

Downtown Wiscasset is the home of Red’s Eats, a seafood takeout restaurant that has been featured in many food and travel shows over the years.
