ORONO — Michelle Weis scored a pair of third-period goals Friday to lift the University of Maine women’s hockey team to its fifth straight win, a 4-1 decision over Merrimack.
Lydia Murray opened the scoring for Maine (16-6-3, 10-3-2 Hockey East) with a power-play goal with 2:10 left in the first period, but Katelyn Rae tied it for Merrimack 4:44 into the second.
Brooke Stacey’s power-play goal put the Black Bears ahead 2-1 1:07 into the third period on a set up from Tereza Vanisova and Anna Zikova’s second assist of the game.
Weis scored her first goal 58 seconds later from Vanisova and Alyson Matteau and added an empty-net goal in the final minute.
Lea-Kristine Demers had 32 saves for the Warriors (8-15-3, 3-11-2); Carly Jackson stopped 28 shots for Maine.
MIDDLEBURY 1, BOWDOIN 0: Madie Leidt scored 4:07 into the first from Jenna Marotta and Lin Han and the Panthers (9-3-1, 5-1-1 NESCAC) held on to beat the Polar Bears (7-5-1, 1-5-1) in Middlebury, Vermont.
Keri St. Denis made 24 saves for Bowdoin.
UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 3, SOUTHERN MAINE 3: Annie Mullen scored the tying goal 9:52 into the third, and the Nor’easters (6-6-6, 1-2-4 NEHC) rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie the Huskies (6-11-1, 2-4-1) in Gorham.
Shannon Colbert and Julia Ormsby each scored in the opening minute of the first for the Huskies.
UNE cut into the lead on a goal from Alex Mitchell at 7:59, but Katie Nolan scored less than six minutes left to push Southern Maine’s lead to 3-1 after the first.
Marykate Drinkwater scored 15:43 into the second period for UNE to make it 3-2. Britney Evangelista had 45 saves for the Huskies.
COLBY 0, AMHERST 0: Cierra San Roman stopped 47 shots for the Mules (4-6-4, 1-4-4 NESCAC), who battled to an overtime draw against the 10th-ranked Mammoths (8-5-2, 4-3-2) at Orr Rink in Amherst, Massachusetts.
Bailey Plaman made 28 saves for Amherst.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
(9) MICHIGAN STATE 85, INDIANA 57: Miles Bridges scored 22 points and Nick Ward had 18 points and 13 rebounds to help the host Spartans (17-3, 5-2 Big Ten) bounce back to top the Hoosiers (11-8, 4-3).
The Spartans had a confidence-boosting performance after going from a top-ranked team to a reeling one. They were slumping after a 16-point loss at Ohio State, an overtime win over Rutgers and an 82-72 setback to Michigan at home.
MEN’S HOCKEY
MIDDLEBURY 3, COLBY 2: Frank Cosolito scored the winning goal with less than two minutes left in the third period from Mitchell Allen to lift the Panthers (5-11, 3-7 NESCAC) over the Mules (7-9, 6-6) in Waterville.
Colby trailed 2-1, but tied the game at 8:01 of the third period on a goal from Spencer Hewson.
Sean Lawrence had 19 saves for the Mules.
SOUTHERN MAINE 3, UMASS-BOSTON 2: Cody Braga scored the winning goal 4:07 into overtime as the Huskies (3-9-4, 3-5-3 NEHC) beat the Beacons (13-5, 8-3) in Boston.
Southern Maine took a 2-1 lead midway though the second period on a goal from Brett Normal, but John Bono tied it for UMass-Boston 4:50 into the third.
Anthony D’Aloisio made 36 saves for the Huskies.
BOWDOIN 4, WILLIAMS 1: Matthew Lison scored twice to lead the Polar Bears (5-11, 3-8 NESCAC) over the Ephs (10-5, 6-3) in Brunswick.
Bradley Ingersoll and Camil Blanchet each scored for Bowdoin. Erik Wurman made 22 saves.
Roberto Cellini scored for Williams, and Stephen Morrissey stopped 36 shots.
UNE 6, WENTWORTH 4: Jeff Eppright and Derek Mecrones each scored twice to lead the Nor’easters (12-3-2, 6-3-2 CCC) over the Leopards (5-10-3, 3-5-3) in Everett, Massachusetts.
Wentworth cut the lead to 5-4 on a goal by Nate Chase 11:09 into the third period. UNE added an empty-net goal with 1:07 remaining by Jeff Eppright.
Andrew Slotnick and Brendan Donohue each scored for UNE.
Tate Sproxton stopped 32 shots for UNE and Ryan Hubbard recorded 26 saves for Wentworth.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
UTAH 58, (22) ARIZONA STATE 56: Utah (13-5, 4-3 Pac-12) rallied from an 11-point deficit to start the fourth quarter and handed the Sun Devils (13-6, 4-3 Pac-12) their first home loss of the season.
Megan Huff had 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Utes, who outscored the Sun Devils 26-13 in the final quarter.
