The moon offered a rare sight Wednesday morning for the first time in about 150 years – a super blue moon that looked blood red.
It’s called a blue moon when the moon is full for a second time in a month, which happens once every two and a half years.
It’s a super moon when the full moon is closest to the Earth in its orbit, which makes it look bigger and brighter than usual. A super moon happens more often – most recently on New Year’s Day this year.
Wednesday’s event also included a total lunar eclipse, which was not totally visible in the U.S., that caused blue light to bounce away from the moon, making the moon look red.
