BOSTON — Red Sox Manager Alex Cora announced Tuesday that left-hander Drew Pomeranz has been placed on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to Saturday, with left biceps tendinitis.

Right-hander Brandon Workman was called up to take the empty spot on the 25-man roster.

Pomeranz was slated to start Thursday night in Detroit, so the Red Sox will have to name a new starter for the final game of their series against the Tigers. Cora said that the club would announce Thursday’s starter in the coming days.

Pomeranz, who has struggled to a 6.81 ERA in eight starts this season, gave up four earned runs on six hits in five innings in Boston’s loss to the Astros on Saturday. Righty Steven Wright, the starter on Tuesday against Detroit, will take Pomeranz’s spot in the rotation moving forward.

Candidates to start Thursday include Hector Velazquez, who has been working out of the bullpen, and Chandler Shepherd and Jalen Beeks, who are on the 40-man roster. Lefty Chris Sale, who pitched Friday in Houston, is not a candidate to take the spot and will remain slotted in for Friday night against the White Sox.

RANGERS: Two-time NL Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum is being granted his unconditional release by Texas after the end of his 30-day rehab assignment.

Lincecum was activated from the 60-day disabled list Tuesday, then given his release.

General Manager Jon Daniels said Lincecum was throwing OK but was still somewhat inconsist with his command. The three-time World Series champion with the Giants hasn’t pitched in the majors since August 2016 with the Los Angeles Angels.

The Rangers added Lincecum during spring training with the idea he could be a reliever. The right-hander developed a blister and started the season on the disabled list. His 30-day rehab assignment at Triple-A Round Rock ended Monday.

Lincecum had a 5.68 ERA in 10 appearances, with 10 strikeouts and nine walks in 122/3 innings.

TIGERS: Detroit selected Texas second baseman Kody Clemens, son of seven-time Cy Young winner Roger Clemens, to lead off the second day of the MLB draft.

The younger Clemens was the Big 12 player of the year and has helped the Longhorns to the NCAA Tournament super regionals.

He is hitting a team-leading .346 with 21 home runs and 68 RBI as one of college baseball’s top sluggers.

The draft resumed Tuesday with the third round, and the Tigers took Clemens 79th overall. Detroit selected Auburn right-hander Casey Mize with the No. 1 overall pick on Monday night.

Indians: Cleveland activated outfielder Lonnie Chisenhall from the 10-day disabled list and optioned outfielder Bradley Zimmer to Triple-A Columbus.

RAYS: Tampa Bay placed starting pitcher Chris Archer on the 10-day disabled list after he left Saturday’s game with a left abdominal strain.
