BRUNSWICK

A Freeport police dog followed her nose late Friday night to the spot where Brunswick police say an attempted burglary suspect was hiding.

A tenant reported a burglary in progress on Lincoln Street at 11:41 p.m.

Brunswick Police Cmdr. Mark Waltz said the suspect fled before police arrived, but was believed to be headed toward Union Street.

Brunswick police called Freeport officer Matthew Moorhouse and his K9, Cassie, to help search for the suspect. The dog tracked the suspect to a fence behind Bank of America at the corner of Maine and Cumberland streets. That’s where police found the suspect hiding behind the fence, Waltz said.

Police say they arrested Ray Reed, 22, of Brunswick, and charged him with attempted burglary, criminal mischief and unlawful possession of a scheduled drug, according to Waltz. He was taken to Cumberland County Jail in Portland and is scheduled to appear on the Cumberland County Unified Criminal Docket on Aug. 21.

Waltz said the incident is still under investigation.
