After 18 months of weekly absurdities in our national politics, last week brought us the story that a well-known comedian made a phone call to President Trump and got his call returned within minutes by Trump from Air Force One. The president and his staff evidently thought the caller was a U.S. senator.

The real surprise is not that it is amateur hour at the White House, nor that security is lacking. The real story is that we have reached a point in time in these United States where it is so easy to confuse a stuttering comedian with an elected official of our federal government.
