Some Scarborough beachgoers had a gross start to their beach day Thursday when they found a rotting shark carcass on the sand.

Experts from Marine Mammals of Maine told NewsCenterMaine the carcass was from a shark.

Scarborough Animal Control Officer Chris Creps told NewsCenterMaine that the animal weighed between 500 and 600 pounds, was 15 feet long and 4 feet wide.

The Public Works Department used heavy equipment to remove the shark species and took it to a nearby landfill to bury it.
