Re: “Letter to the editor: Shawn Moody is driven only by self-interest” (July 24), by Ellen D. Murphy:

How easy it is to criticize Republican gubernatorial candidate Shawn Moody for an interest he has had since childhood. I saw the photo of Mr. Moody, successful owner of many Moody’s auto repair shops over the entire state of Maine, and imagine him wishfully thinking: “I can win these NASCAR races with my car; then I can help even more people … the opioid crisis … elderly staying in their own homes … finding homes for those less fortunate …”

No. I see no self-interest there. I can see Mr. Moody dreaming big, not for himself, but for many.

I do not know Mr. Moody personally, but I know he instills care: His shops are neat and clean; at one of his shops an employee fixed the roof lining of my old car and would not let me pay; I am a neighbor where his parents live. All these things indicate a caring employer, a caring son and a caring person. A caring candidate for governor of the state of Maine.

It would be best if we didn’t jump to conclusions until we know the facts. Facts are truly not hard to find; it may take longer, but it’s well worth it. Just do it this campaign season.
